  • Unexpected encounter playing hide and seek at Battery Russell

I have recently been watching the show Portals to Hell where Jack Osbourne and Katrina Weidman explore haunted locations and was reminded of a time that my family was visiting Fort Stevens. In the mid-90s I was 9 years old and my dad, brother and I visited Fort Stevens and stayed in the campground there for a few weeks. We loved hiking and playing hide and seek in the woods or at different places. I remember we went to battery Russell and as we were walking around exploring I felt in the lower level that there was something else there. Since we were the only people there my dad decided we could play hide and seek there. I ran around in the lower area where it was darker looking for a place to hide and when I turned a corner I saw a man dressed in some sort of military uniform walking out of the room. To me he just looked like a military man. I didn’t say anything to him or think much of it because I was trying to be quiet and hide so my dad couldn’t find me. Afterwards I told my brother and dad about him and they laughed and said it was my imagination because they had ran around that area too and we were the only people there. I wasn’t scared of the military man I saw he just seemed to be walking around doing his job. But I had seen other things like that since I was even younger that people said weren’t there. I went back there a few times as an adult and never saw it again but still feel the presence of something there. I had no idea this was a haunted area until I was recently looking up haunted locations in Oregon and found out others had seen this man. Pretty validating to me and what I saw as a child that was laughed off and dismissed as my imagination then.

We have been to Battery Russell several times. One time, about 5 years ago, my brother and I went to investigate the paranormal reports at Battery Russell. We are paranormal investigators with extensive experience investigating many paranormal sites. We we at the battery a short time. I was rolling on my mini DV camera when my brother made a comment about his camera. Upon reviewing the video, we can hear a women's voice say "yes" in a loud whisper after he made the comment. Later, I found a You Tube video about Battery Russell and the narrator said that other people have heard the same "yes" after asking questions. Creepy. Want to go back and do a follow up.

  • Voices of the dark

A group of friends and I went to fort Stevens about two months ago. As soon as we entered Battery Russel there was a heavy feeling in the air. We remained silent as we stood in the darkness but couldn’t get over the feeling of someone watching us. Then the voices came. It was like someone was whispering in your ear and a chill would run through your spine. The heavy anxious feeling contained all the way up until we left the battery. But started again whenever we would go into the many other battery’s around the area. Especially when walking across the field of the demolished bunkhouses.

  • Unexplained sound on the bottom level

I went to Fort Stevens a few months ago with my friend. We were exploring the very bottom level of the fort and went inside to a dark room with remnants of a track on the ceiling. When I walked into the darkest part of the room I heard faint wailing. Sounded like someone was in pain. When I explained the noise to by friend she said she heard a faint wail as well but when I asked my friend's sister she said that she heard nothing. Then we went up to the top level to a hole in the ground with a small wall-ish type thing. The hole lead to a spot in the bottom level and I heard shouting but it was hushed. It was as if someone was yelling out orders
