Des Chutes Historical Museum
Bend, OR 97701
This museum used to be a schoolhouse and it is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of a man who died in 1914. The employees know him as "George" and he is blamed for moving objects around the building or making them vanish completely. Some also say they have seen a misty white apparition drifting through the hallway after hours.

I am a longtime volunteer at the museum, and yes, the museum is indeed haunted by multiple spirits (for lack of a better word).
I was told the museum was haunted, that paranormal investigations had offered evidence of paranormal activity. We all hear stories like that, right? I didn’t think too much about it, but when I saw the evidence that the investigators shared with the museum Director, I was in awe.
I contacted some professional paranormal investigators, and inquired about best practices when investigating potentially paranormal spaces.
To start, I used an “old fashioned” tape recorder. With permission, I placed the recorder on the 3rd floor storage area. The space was filled with artifacts and relics that were not being presently utilized for display. There were also volumes upon volumes of archived Bend Bulletin, dating back to 1910 or so.
I was working on archiving materials to digital format in the room across the hall in the 3rd floor. I offered the opportunity to communicate, set some boundaries and pushed record.
It wasn’t long until I was getting EVPS on the regular.
Male voices, female voices, what sounded like a child or woman crying. I did not EVER hear or see anything in the moment. Only during playback.
My most vivid experience in this space was what sounded like a woman. I had started using my flip phone to record at this point, and I was so curious and frankly, heavy hearted to know that perhaps the voices I captured on EVP were in limbo of some kind. Why hang out at a museum, why not carry on into the vast unknown? It was this day, with these thoughts, that I captured a women’s voice: “I can’t go” ——“I want to”.
